Can You Stay at a Ski Resort Without Skiing?

If the idea of skiing or snowboarding terrifies you, but you don’t want to miss out when your friends head to the slopes, or you don’t want to stay behind while the rest of your family gears up for a winter resort adventure, that’s ok, there’s still plenty of fun to be had in ski towns all over the U.S. While there are a few exceptions, the majority of ski resorts across the country and world welcome all types of guests and offer tons of indoor and outdoor activities that don’t require you to hurtle yourself down the side of a slippery and snowy mountain.

DO YOU HAVE TO SKI TO STAY AT A SKI RESORT?

There are many great ski towns in the USA and all over the world that you can enjoy without ever having to hit the slopes. If you want to breathe in fresh mountain air, try alternative outdoor activities, or just enjoy some hot chocolate in a cozy cabin beside a roaring fire after a day spent browsing galleries or markets, rest assured that is possible. Ski resorts usually offer a range of activities and amenities beyond skiing and snowboarding to accommodate a variety of guests, including those who may not be interested in winter sports, and that makes them well worth a visit.

The reality is that the mountains are beautiful, and you don’t need to be a two-planker or a snowboard shredder to appreciate the snow-covered peaks, the snow-dusted forests, and the crisp alpine air. Luckily, you can typically stay at a ski resort without skiing. So if you’d rather not ride up a chairlift or rip down a trail, that doesn’t mean you have to miss out on a fun winter vacation. There are many reasons people choose not to ski, from fear of heights, to injuries, or budget limitations and it’s common to have one or more family members that are interested in different things, but still want to be a part of a vacation or trip.

If you're not interested in skiing or snowboarding, you can still likely enjoy a stay at a ski resort and take advantage of other amenities and activities they offer. Just be sure to check with the specific resort you're interested in to see what non-skiing options are available during your visit. You’ll also want to know exactly where your lodging is located and have a plan if you’ll need access to transportation for any of those alternative activities. Staying slopeside might be convenient for the skiers in your group, but it might leave you far from non-skiing activities and vice versa, so be sure to think about the needs of everyone coming along.

NON-SKIER ACTIVITIES FOR A SKI RESORT VACATION

Most modern ski resorts are home to world class dining, hotels, and a plethora of incredible outdoor and indoor activities that even hardcore skiers will love. A ski trip doesn’t have to be about just skiing, it can be a winter adventure for everyone. Non-skiers don’t have to stay in their hotel room reading books all day, although that is a delightful option as the views from balconies are normally quite inspiring! While most resorts are geared towards skiers, snowboarders, and outdoor activities you can still find alternative options.

Ski resorts are usually located in picturesque mountain settings with breathtaking views. Many guests come simply to enjoy the natural beauty, take in the mountain scenery, and relax in a peaceful environment. These resorts frequently have spa facilities, hot tubs, saunas, and other wellness amenities where guests can unwind and de-stress. If you’re looking for something more social, resorts frequently offer shopping, including boutiques and souvenir shops, and some also have entertainment options like live music, movies, or special events. Ski resorts usually have excellent restaurants, bars, and lounges, too, where guests can indulge in fine dining, enjoy après-ski activities, and socialize in a cozy atmosphere.

Many ski resorts provide opportunities for outdoor activities beyond skiing, such as snowshoeing, ice skating, snowmobiling, sled dog or sleigh rides. These activities allow guests to experience the winter wonderland without hitting the slopes. Guests who enjoy nature and the outdoors may find enjoyment in hiking, bird-watching, or exploring the surrounding landscape, and ski resort areas provide excellent opportunities for photography, especially if you're interested in capturing the beauty of the natural environment. Ski resorts are often family-friendly, and many offer kids' clubs, children's play areas, in addition to activities suitable for non-skiers, making them great destinations for family vacations.
