East West Destination Hospitality promotes John Patterson to Regional Engineering Director

East West Destination Hospitality is pleased to announce that John (JP) Patterson has been promoted to the position of Regional Engineering Director overseeing The Westin Riverfront Resort & Spa at Beaver Creek Mountain as well as Snowmass Hospitality and managed Associations.

Patterson joined the East West team in 2015 as the Director of Engineering at The Westin Riverfront. He previously spent more than 20 years with the Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company, including more than nine years as the Corporate Director of Projects. He also spent nearly five years in Engineering Management for Hyatt Hotels.

“The Westin Riverfront and the associations managed by Snowmass Hospitality involve very complex systems, so we are fortune to have someone of JP’s caliber overseeing both teams,” said East West Destination Hospitality Managing Partner Colleen Weiss-Hanen. “JP is very well respected and has demonstrated the ability to manage complicated systems while overseeing a strong engineering team.”

Last month, East West Partners, KSL Capital Partners, LLC and Aspen Skiing Company finalized the purchase to complete Colorado’s Snowmass Base Village project. The joint venture includes all commercial spaces in the Base Village, the Snowmass Hospitality property management company and the Viceroy Hotel, as well as all remaining development parcels. Construction in the Snowmass Base Village is expected to begin this spring.

Record powder piling up in Colorado & California!

A series of strong winter storms continue to cover Lake Tahoe and the Vail Valley in record snow levels – Northstar is reporting 42 inches of snow in the past 24 hours and 122 inches in the past 7 days. That is more than 10 feet of snow!!

In the Vail Valley, both Vail & Beaver Creek are reporting more than 30 inches of fresh powder this week.

Beaver Creek ranked #2 Best Ski Resort for Families by U.S.A. Today

USA Today 10 Best is kicking off 2017 with a new list of the “Best U.S. Ski Resorts for Families” and it ranks Beaver Creek Resort as the #2 destination.

The story gives praise to Beaver Creek’s Buckaroo Express Gondola, which helps little ones stay warm as they get comfortable on beginner green terrain.

And of course they mention everyone’s favorite way to end a ski day – with one (or three) of Beaver Creek’s world famous warm chocolate chip cookies.

East West Partners, KSL Capital Partners & Aspen Skiing Co. Close on Purchase of Snowmass Base Village from Related Cos.

A joint venture of East West Partners (East West), Aspen Skiing Company (ASC), and an affiliate of KSL Capital Partners, LLC (KSL)has closed on the acquisition of the Snowmass base village project from Snowmass Acquisition Company, an affiliate of the Related Companies (Related).

The purchase includes all remaining development parcels and commercial spaces in base village, the Snowmass Hospitality property management company and the Viceroy Hotel, including the unsold condominium units within the Viceroy.

The joint venture, comprised entirely of Colorado-based companies, will move swiftly to commence construction on the partially complete base village core in Spring 2017, with East West responsible for all day-to-day operations. The joint venture has actually been advancing predevelopment work on the entire core of the project since the deal was announced in September, including pre-construction on the Limelight Hotel and public plaza/ice rink and advancement of design on the community building and on the two front door buildings currently known as buildings 7 and 8.

The joint venture’s plan is to begin construction on the Limelight Hotel this spring, with construction of the community building, the public plaza/ice rink and Building 4 commencing over the summer. Construction of Buildings 7 and 8 is projected to start in the latter part of 2017.

“After over a year of hard work by all parties involved, we are thrilled to have closed on this acquisition. East West has been pursuing this project for many years so it is extremely exciting for this opportunity to finally come to fruition with the help of our partners at Aspen Skiing Company and KSL Capital.” said Craig Ferraro, East West managing partner. “We believe the completion of base village will be a great addition to Snowmass, and we could not imagine a better group of dedicated and experienced partners to join forces with to make this happen.”

ASC will purchase from the joint venture and operate the Limelight Hotel and a Four Mountain Sports retail space from the joint venture once these components of the project are finished. ASC will operate both properties after it buys them from the joint venture. This will be the third Limelight hotel for ASC, with the new Limelight in Ketchum, ID scheduled to open shortly. The upscale casual concept has proven successful in Aspen.

“This is an exciting day for Aspen Skiing Company and the entire Snowmass community and we are happy to be moving forward,” said Mike Kaplan, president and CEO, Aspen Skiing Company. “We have remained committed to Snowmass as one of the best ski areas in the world and we are thrilled to be working with East West and KSL to complete the base village and bring our guests a world-class experience on and off the mountain.”

Andy Gunion from East West will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the joint venture. Gunion has been with East West for more than 12 years and has led the acquisition work on base village. He has a broad range of relevant experience from project management of East West’s Westin resort in Avon to his most recent role as CFO for the company. Gunion and his wife are relocating to the Roaring Fork Valley.

“This closing is the culmination of many months of extremely hard work by our joint venture and by Related. With the acquisition behind us, we can now turn our full attention to execution of the development plan,“ said Gunion.

“This is a complex and important project, so we are relocating and combining some of East West’s most experienced professionals from across the country with the excellent existing team at Snowmass Hospitality. We look forward to working with the Town and others in the community to continue our Snowmass education and to bring the full vision of base village to reality. With a new vibrant hotel, activated plaza, ice rink, Discovery Center, this next phase of development should prove to be an exciting, transformative period for Snowmass.”

Snowmass Mayor Markey Butler said there is renewed excitement around the base village project being handled by this local, Colorado-based team.

“With East West Partner’s track record in the ski industry and the commitment by KSL Partners and Aspen Skiing Company behind it all, we could not have envisioned a better more experienced partnership to move this forward and get base village finally finished,” Butler said.

Walking Mountains Science Center Nature at Night interactive winter program returns to The Westin Riverfront

The Westin Riverfront Resort & Spa is pleased to be continuing its partnership with Vail Valley’s Walking Mountains Science Center by once again offering free interactive Nature at Night programs weekly this ski season.

Nature at Night will be held on 13 Thursday evenings from 4 p.m. – 5 p.m. in The Westin Riverfront Lobby. Topics for the weekly hands-on programs range from astronomy to the different types of birds and animals found here in the Vail Valley to the science of snow.

“We are thrilled to once again be offering this unique opportunity to learn about nature here in the Vail Valley,” said Westin Riverfront General Manager Kristen Pryor. “Partnering with Walking Mountains is an amazing way to showcase our shared passion for sustainability and to create lifelong memories for our guests.”

Vail Spa Condominiums completes $10 million renovation

The Vail Spa Condominiums Homeowners Association, which is managed by East West Destination Hospitality, has completed the $10 million renovation project that it launched last spring.

Vail’s KH Webb Architects oversaw the design and RA Nelson handled the execution of the Vail Spa renovation, which was completed in just over seven months. Koll Consulting of Glenwood Springs helped to manage the project as the Owner’s Representative.

Owners at the Vail Spa Condominiums, which originally opened in 1980, recognized the need for major refurbishment and funded the $10 million in upgrades, which included a full exterior remodel with copper, stucco and wood accents and the installation of new exterior pavers and snowmelt system. On the interior, the building has new finishes to its upper and lower lobbies and refurbished elevator cars with upgraded digital equipment. The Lionshead property also completely renovated its locker, spa and fitness areas, with new tile and finishes to the indoor and outdoor pool and hot tub areas, plus upgraded lighting and automated pool covers.

To help make the building more environmentally friendly, new energy efficient and noise reducing windows and doors were installed in all 56 of the Vail Spa residences, and a rooftop solar heating mechanical system was installed for the pools, hot tubs and locker rooms.
